On the Learnability of the Uncomputable
نویسنده
چکیده
Within Valiant's model of learning as formalized by Kearns, we show that computable total predicates for two formally uncomputable problems (the classical Halting Problem, and the Halting Problem relative to a speci ed oracle) are formally learnable from examples, to arbitrarily high accuracy with arbitrarily high con dence, under any probability distribution. The Halting Problem relative to the oracle is learnable in time polynomial in the measures of accuracy, con dence, and the length of the learned predicate. The classical Halting Problem is learnable in expected time polynomial in the measures of accuracy, con dence, and the (1 =16) th percentile length and run-time of programs which do halt on their inputs (these quantities are always nite). Equivalently, the mean length and run-time may be substituted for the percentile values in the time complexity statement. The proofs are constructive. While the problems are learnable, they are not polynomially learnable, even though we do derive polynomial time bounds on the learning algorithm.

Count-mass Distinction in the Acquisition of English Articles by Persian Learners of English
Articles in general and definite articles in particular can create problems even long after all other aspects of English have been mastered. The present article investigated the learnability problems related to the acquisition of count-mass distinction of English nominals by Persian L2 learners. The theoretical underpinning of the study is the interpretability hypothesis (Tsimpli & Dimitrakopou...
متن کاملUniform Convergence, Stability and Learnability for Ranking Problems
Most studies were devoted to the design of efficient algorithms and the evaluation and application on diverse ranking problems, whereas few work has been paid to the theoretical studies on ranking learnability. In this paper, we study the relation between uniform convergence, stability and learnability of ranking. In contrast to supervised learning where the learnability is equivalent to unifor...
متن کاملPolynomially Uncomputable Number-Theoretic Problems in Cryptography and Network Security
By far the most important automated tool for network and communications security is encryption, but encryption itself needs security. As we know, many cryptosystems and cryptographic protocols are based their security on some computationally intractable mathematical problems. In this paper, we shall discuss some of the number-theoretic problems that are currently polynomially uncomputable and t...
متن کاملAcquisition of English Unergative and Unaccusative Structures by Persian EFL Learners
The acquisition of argument structures has been studied by a variety of second language acquisition scholars within the past two decades (Atay, 2010; Can, 2009; Chay, 2006, & Kras, 2007, among others). In the present study, ‘Predicate’ as the most substantial element of a sentence is investigated. There are three English verb-types which seem to be more problematic for Persian EFL learners: (a)...
متن کاملLearnability of Augmented Naive Bayes in Nonimal Domains
It is well-known that Naive Bayes can only represent linearly separable functions in binary domains. But the learnability of general Augmented Naive Bayes is open. Little work is done on the learnability of Bayesian networks in nominal domains, a general case of binary domains. This paper explores the learnability of Augmented Naive Bayes in nominal domains. We introduce a complexity measure fo...
